Weight loss has become an national obsession. And this is for good reason, recently the surgeon general named obesity as one of the main killing ailments in our country. Nevertheless, there are always people who will go to extremes when dealing with the problem of losing weight, and they end up developing eating disorders. The top two most prevalent eating disorders in America are anorexia and bulimia.
Generally, bulimia is though of as binge eating followed by forced vomiting, purging the food that was consumed. Some induce vomiting by taking drugs, while others use the tried and true method of sticking a finger down their throat.
Still others may feel that they are controlling their lives by using laxatives to lose weight. Many do not understand that by making your waste expel from you body in such a violent manner you can injure your bowels. This can lead to a thin spot which can tear the wall. A tear in the intestines allows fecal matter to enter the rest of the body and cause contamination.
Laxatives also change the body’s balance of water. The extra water to used to purge the waste is pulled in from other tissues. This can cause the person to dehydrate, leading to a whole world of other medical problems.
A person definitely has an eating disorder if they forcefully vomit or take too many laxatives right after a meal.
These individuals should immediately consult their physician or another medical professional for treatment and to determine any other hidden problems that may be causing their eating disorder.
