The Dangers Of Using Laxatives To Lose Weight

March 11th, 2010 | admin | new diet

Is Using Laxatives To Lose Weight Really Effective?

Weight loss has become an national obsession. And this is for good reason, recently the surgeon general named obesity as one of the main killing ailments in our country. Nevertheless, there are always people who will go to extremes when dealing with the problem of losing weight, and they end up developing eating disorders. The top two most prevalent eating disorders in America are anorexia and bulimia.

Generally, bulimia is though of as binge eating followed by forced vomiting, purging the food that was consumed. Some induce vomiting by taking drugs, while others use the tried and true method of sticking a finger down their throat.

Still others may feel that they are controlling their lives by using laxatives to lose weight. Many do not understand that by making your waste expel from you body in such a violent manner you can injure your bowels. This can lead to a thin spot which can tear the wall. A tear in the intestines allows fecal matter to enter the rest of the body and cause contamination.

Laxatives also change the body’s balance of water. The extra water to used to purge the waste is pulled in from other tissues. This can cause the person to dehydrate, leading to a whole world of other medical problems.

A person definitely has an eating disorder if they forcefully vomit or take too many laxatives right after a meal.

These individuals should immediately consult their physician or another medical professional for treatment and to determine any other hidden problems that may be causing their eating disorder.

Can I Safely Lose Weight Using Laxatives?

March 11th, 2010 | admin | new diet

Are All Weight Loss Laxatives Harmful?

These days, more and more people are worried about their weight. This could have something to do wit the fact that the Surgeon General posted a warning on the dangers of obesity. Some people claim that laxatives are a great weight loss solution and advocate adding them to dietary programs to reduce body mass. Even skeptics want to know ‘Are all weight loss laxatives harmful?’

There is a plain response to that question: no. Laxatives are only designed to clear solid waste that obstructs the intestines. When used to forcefully evacuate the bowel, however, they can cause tears in the intestinal wall which may lead to an infection.

The principles behind how laxatives work in the body are the reason why their use will only result in a short term weight loss of a very limited amount–usually no more than 5 or 6 pounds. This loss can be maintained only until the next consumption of food or drink.

There are many laxatives such as stool softeners, stimulants, fiber, and saline. Laxatives found in stores are often a mixture of at least two different varieties. It is important to note that most of these work by taking water away from the other tissues in the body and forcing it into the intestine in an effort to soften the stool and make it pass more easily. As a result, the weight loss enjoyed by the laxative user is truly only water.

No laxatives are safe for weight loss, end of story. Even if there were, the limited scope of function that laxatives serve would not allow for any significant weight loss nor for any weight loss of a permanent nature.

The truth is laxatives take water away from other areas of the body to flush waste. The excess water makes the waste pass much easier and in a much softer form.

Facts About Using Laxatives for Weight Loss

March 11th, 2010 | admin | new diet

With the facts that obesity is heading toward epidemic proportions, setting a goal of losing weight is a good idea. The idea of taking laxatives as a means of shedding pound, however, is just plain ridiculous.

The process of digestion starts in the mouth, proceeding through more than 20 feet of intestines and organs into the stomach, after which it is processed by the small intestine. By the time the remainder of your food reaches the large intestine, it is entirely waste material.

The large intestine is alive with a wide variety of bacteria, which are not dangerous to the health if they stay confined to the intestine. The function of these bacteria is to help process the waste into smaller pieces in order that the body can safely and easily shed it.

Also noteworthy is the fact that with denser material in the lover intestines come a balance with water. As that balance can sometimes be messed up, you may perhaps find yourself either loose or hard stool. Constipation results when the balance leans too far toward the dry and diarrhea results when the balance leads toward too much water.

When laxatives are used the goal is to pull water into that bowel are from the tissues to soften the stool and make it possible for it to be eliminated easily. Since there is never any significant weight from whatever waste material is in the large intestine, ingesting laxatives to help with weight loss won’t ever work. The large intestine rarely hold more than five pounds of waste and water at any time.

Even if one is successful in losing weight by taking laxatives, the fact is that this weight will return as soon as any water or food is drunk or eaten. To effectively loose a significant number of pounds and keep them off, you must modify your nutrition and begin a cardiovascular/aerobics type workout.

Eating right starts with adding foods that are low in fat and high in nutritional value to your diet, use fruits and vegetables to replace junk foods, to ensure that you start losing weight.
2)    Instead of eating 3 large meals a day, try consuming 5 or 6 smaller meals daily. If carbohydrates is part of your daily diet, ensure that they are good carbohydrates such as whole-wheat grains, brown rice, oats and vegetables. It is always good to have plenty of  vegetables.
3)    Inculcating exercise into your daily regime is essential to burning fat. Anybody advising you on fat loss tips would tell that the most efficient way to lose fat is by burning calories, and one of the best available ways to burn calories is exercise. A good exercise will help you feeling better overall. You will feel healthier, will sleep better and will have more energy. One great way of losing fat, is through the use of strength training as an exercise method.
4)    Maintaining the amount of protein you eat daily is vital. A good rule of thumb would be to maintain your body weight in pounds and use grams as your guide to the amount of protein that you should consume daily. It would be particularly helpful to get on the bike or treadmill every morning on empty stomach soon after you wake up. Since you have not eaten prior to the exercise, your body will derive its energy from the stored excess fat instead of your muscles. Workout on the treadmill or bike for at least 20 minutes daily, if not more. And do it before you have eaten.
6)    Another effective yet easy way of burning fat is simply by drinking cold water. Yes cold water! Cold water helps kickstart your body’s metabolism rate and hastens the process of burning calories, which translates to burning more fat!
